Client case studies, Values-based business
I first met Simon Kelly when he spoke at the Sydney WordCamp conference in 2017. Owner of Renegade Empire, Simon is a highly regarded website designer, funnel specialist and systems expert who’s coached other web designers and digital agencies to optimise and grow their agency alongside Troy Dean in Agency Mavericks (formerly WP Elevation).
Since we met in 2017, Simon and I kept in touch, talking shop when I visited his hometown of Melbourne. In an industry that’s full of web designers who lack communication skills and customer service, Simon stands out as a genuinely nice guy, well regarded for his ability to make complex technology seem simple and achievable.
Unsustainable business
Website design can be hugely demanding, with long hours in front of a screen, lots of technical detail, countless back-and-forth communications between clients and team members, and the frequent need to update one’s skills.
Simon lives in Melbourne, which had been disproportionately burdened by continuing and extended Covid lockdowns. He was working too-long hours and wanted to build a business that would give high value to his clients, while giving him the freedom to take time to travel with his girlfriend.
As things stood, he didn’t see how this would be possible.
“What I was doing wasn’t sustainable”, says Simon. “I was working a whole lot and just not feeling like I was getting out what I was putting in. I was low in energy and frankly, I’d lost my enjoyment of my business. I’m a little embarrassed to say I wasn’t very excited to serve my clients.”
“I didn’t really know what was wrong exactly, but I did know I needed help with my business model and my marketing. I wanted someone who could support me to see my blind spots and guide me towards better decisions.”
Simon reached out to me mid-way through 2021 for one-to-one business coaching. “I knew your niche was value-based service business owners. I like how you run your business and life, how real your marketing feels, and how courageous you appear. I wanted to soak up some of that courage, happiness and excitement.”
“When I filled out your first form to book a call with you, I could already see how your form questions focused on the things that I needed: to make great offers, to provide real value, to improve my marketing, and to increase my personal energy and enjoyment of what I do.”
The volatility of running your own business
Simon was earning good money at Renegade Empire before he engaged me for coaching. With his special skill for optimising processes, lack of which causes a lot of stress, headaches and rework for web designers and agencies, he’d already systematised his business. He had a steady stream of inquiries, referrals and recurring income.
But burnout was close by and he was feeling emotionally fatigued and flat – very common amongst business owners, and that’s before we add the extended stressors of Covid and Melbourne’s numerous and extended lockdowns.
The volatility of self-employment – with high highs and low lows – is frequently cited as the number one reason why businesses close down. And while particular tactics can help smooth out cash flow, the emotional volatility for owners should never be under-estimated, posing a real danger, both mentally and fiscally.
In our first session together, I coached Simon to identify personal short-term and long-term goals that were meaningful and unique to him and his business.
“You weren’t dismissive of my stress, but you wouldn’t let me dwell in it. You made me feel that I could show up, in exactly whatever state I was in, and we could move from there. You normalised the many emotions of business and had relatable stories for pretty much everything I was going through,” says Simon.
Simon rediscovered practical ways to improve his mood and energy levels. He refined and improved his processes even further and turned these into the Renegade Empire signature system.
I provoked him to identify and embrace his unique approach, use densely branded language, move away from common industry terms and develop his own unique parlance (or “Simonisms”) and turn his system into a visual model that could be easily understood by prospective clients and others.
Your attitude is your biggest business asset
Since working with me, Simon has reconnected with his purpose and enthusiasm for his business, and life. He’s better defined his ideal client and reinforced his boundaries around who he takes on, to avoid having his time and energy sapped by bad-fit clients.
“Since coaching with Brook, I know now that I can have a great life and a great business, increasing my revenue and profits without working more hours or sacrificing my time off. I now appreciate the role that fun plays to making my business financially robust and personally rewarding.”
“Brook made me feel heard, without indulging a bad mood. She modeled the resilience I needed to take action on difficult things and to pick myself up when I didn’t get the results I wanted. With her support, I process setbacks far more quickly and am far more kind to myself,” says Simon.
“Coaching homework that we set together, including her additional resources and assets like the ‘Banking Confidence’ meditation, were both productive as well as enjoyable to do. I upgraded my business as well as my life, which has opened a lot of new doors.”
“I’m far more excited about my business and am far better at recognising opportunities than I was before. I’m producing work far easier and quicker, things such as blog posts and email content.”
Perhaps most importantly, Simon isn’t retreating when his mood takes a dive. With increasing stress and risk as businesses grow, it’s even more important that owners take their moods and mental health seriously.
“I’m sharing my struggles and problems openly, instead of hiding from them. In the past, I would hide and try and improve alone, whereas now, I’m actively seeking more help and more people to talk with and grow together,” says Simon.
“No matter what the challenge, Brook helped me face it. It wasn’t always comfortable, but she helped guide me through it all.”

Client case studies
Charmaine Cowling had just opened a Yoga studio on the Sunshine Coast in November 2019 and things were going well. Then Covid came along. “Do you know you’re closed tomorrow from midday?” Charmaine’s husband asked her, after watching the news.
“We didn’t sleep much that night,” says Charmaine. “Yoga and Pilates studios in Queensland weren’t clear on whether or not we fall under the umbrella of fitness studios.”
Charmaine joined the Hustle & Heart program in September 2019, when she was still working as an Assistant School Principal. Charmaine had engaged a few marketing people to help them get their business idea off the ground. “Then my husband started watching Brook’s Facebook Live videos and we started following Brook. We read her blogs and emails and realised Brook’s advice was aligned with what we needed to get moving,” says Charmaine.
“We loved Brook’s focus on ideal clients. We didn’t want to attract everyone. We wanted to create a culture of kindness in a boutique setting. It was important to bring the right people to us.”
Making the studio financially viable as quickly as possible
Charmaine used her one-to-one business coaching time that’s part of the Hustle & Heart program to brainstorm how to sell 60 foundational year-long memberships to Haven Yoga Studio, to make the studio financially viable as quickly as possible.
“I had no experience in sales and was a bit intimidated at how to sign up clients to our year-long memberships, but Brook’s advice was gold – we created a plan for selling those memberships more easily, and ended up with 65 annual clients within three months.”
The studio is built on memberships, with the vast majority of students becoming members. Introductory passes are an easy way for new clients to experience classes with as many of the studio’s teachers as possible before deciding which membership to commit to.
“I quote the Hustle & Heart program all the time, especially when meeting new and evolving business owners. I love reminding them that free is not always the best way to grow clients and that it’s okay for your prices to be higher if what you’re sharing is high quality and in demand,” says Charmaine.
Charmaine found her graphic designer to design her new Haven Yoga Studio brand within the Hustle & Heart program community. Business was humming along fairly well, despite new studio competitors opening nearby. Then Covid hit.
From bricks-and-mortar to online studio, overnight
“On that first day we closed, we rallied our yoga, barre and mat pilates teachers together and invested in equipment for teaching online. My husband and I raced around buying and borrowing AV equipment. Overnight, I’m learning about microphones, lighting, streaming video. We built a ‘studio within the studio’ and offered 17 live, online classes a week with our teachers filming in the studio,” says Charmaine.
“Our teachers were absolute superstars. We wanted to support them, continue to pay for classes and engage them with our clients. It was amazing that some of our teachers refused payment for teaching because they had income from other places and wanted to support our new small business.”
Despite acting quickly to provide an online studio alternative, the financial fallout was swift as the Sunshine Coast closed down, like the rest of the country.
Every day the studio would lose at least one payment, as clients placed their memberships on hold or asked for compassion. In the end, Charmaine decided to offer a pause to all members and amazingly many continued to support the online studio through continuing to pay their membership. Three yoga studios on the Sunshine Coast closed their doors during this time, not to reopen. In the midst of the chaos, Charmaine turned 40.
Countless questions
“The Hustle & Heart program group on Facebook was a godsend during Covid,” says Charmaine. “All of us were dealing with the same issues and upheavals. I had so many questions, as did everyone.
“It was a steep learning curve and invaluable to have the support of Brook and others who were more experienced in their businesses. As I hadn’t yet opened my business when I did the program back in September, I was probably a little different to others in the group. I was able to apply some of the wisdom from the group and program before heading down certain paths such as setting my price and marketing my value.”
Haven Yoga Studio now has a storehouse of 180 videos and are on a steady path to recovering following the fallout of the studio closure. After 11 weeks of online classes, the studio reopened on June 8.
When asked about what she found most valuable about the program, Charmaine says, “Knowing who our ideal clients are, and who they’re not, was invaluable from day one. It helped me better focus my marketing, understand who my ideal client was and what they were seeking, so I could tailor the studio to attract the right clients, who make it a joy to come to work!”
“The program covered so many things! But probably the most valuable was not to undersell or underestimate our value. Also, the power of email and following up with clients in a personal manner. Also, that your brand has value and values, and that you determine these and stay consistent with them.”
Says Charmaine, “Of course it’s stressful starting a new business, especially in 2020! But I’ve found it immensely rewarding. To be unapologetic about what you believe, and how you act. It’s really shifted my whole belief, as seeing money as something you earn from work, to earning money doing something you love, without needing to change who you are or what values you hold dear.”
“The Hustle and Heart program strikes such a wonderful balance between feeling extremely supported, yet independent to really do what we want with our own businesses, because every person and every business is unique.”
When asked what she’d say to anyone considering the program, Charmaine says, “Be prepared to thoroughly enjoy the program, the modules are entertaining and practical, the conversations are interesting and unexpected, and Brook not only is an exceptional mentor, she’s also a hoot who loves to celebrate small victories with us.”
Is it your time? Whether you’ve not-yet-launched, or are an experienced powerhouse with decades in self-employment, the Hustle & Heart program helps you magnify your impact. Open for a limited time.
Business coaching, Client case studies
Fiona Donohue-Bales did one-to-one business coaching with me some four years ago, and participated in our last intake of the Hustle & Heart program, in September 2017. Here’s her story.
I began my business around 18 years ago in the year 2000, when my kids were still in nappies! I started out fuelled by passion and a desire to share my love of yoga with as many new mothers as I could. Back then it was very much a ‘hobby’ business that allowed me plenty of time to be with the kids. Over the years that little hobby business continued to grow organically alongside my growing family.
I consider myself first and foremost a practitioner. Although I have an entrepreneurial spirit I feel like I’m in business by default, like so many of us do. Self-employment also suits my personality – I love the freedom, flexibility and creativity it can bring and I have a particular vision of what I want to deliver and how I want to deliver it.
Yoga has always been a huge part of my life ever since my early teens. I’ve specialised in prenatal and postnatal yoga for the past 20 years and am also a qualified counselor, mindfulness teacher, public speaker, podcaster and yoga therapist. I love what I do but the marketing aspect can be challenging. I’d rather just concentrate on working in my business than on my business. However, the reality is that if you want to get your message out there to the people you really care about it helps to have the marketing savvy to navigate what has become an increasingly crowded market.
I’ve known Brook for a long time and had had one-to-one business coaching with her some years ago. I’d had a few other business coaches and done other business programs and hadn’t had quite the same kind of results. When I saw the Hustle & Heart program I knew immediately that I would be with other like-minded souls under the stewardship of a bright, thoughtful and caring facilitator.
Community-minded
Being in business can sometimes be a lonely world, especially as a solo practitioner. It’s easy to get confused, lack direction from time to time and become overwhelmed by all the possibilities of what you can and can’t do! In contrast, in the corporate world you can always ask for, and receive direction guidance and input from colleagues. I was looking for a community with a leader who had insight and experience to draw from.
It’s clear to see that a lot of care, love and years of experience have gone into the Hustle & Heart program. The weekly course modules are delivered in do-able bite-sized chunks. One of my biggest obstacles in business is feeling stuck from lack of confidence and doubt. Right from the start, the modules got me reflecting, moving and acting.
Brook has a calm, steady presence and she makes her clients feel valued and included. Brook’s tone is direct, authoritative, discerning yet always warm and compassionate. The main thing is she ‘gets it!’ She knows what it’s like to be in business, have a family and have dreams and a vision for a better world.
Every business and every owner is unique
When I opened the first Hustle & Heart module about money, and particularly Brook’s concept of elegant sufficiency, I knew I’d made a good decision to join the program. Brook doesn’t just care about business, she cares about people’s best interests. She understands that everybody has unique needs and she doesn’t try to influence their goals or encourage them to want a particular business model.
I loved the way the program was broken down into modules and lessons. I like to take my time to chew on new ideas and think things through. It feels like every detail has been thought through and organised into bite-sized chunks, which makes it approachable and so much more do-able.
My nature is to be very ideas-led. I tend to get overwhelmed from time to time so I really appreciated the structure and organisation of information. The program is so comprehensive and Brook has really thought about every detail. I also really enjoyed all the different formats and how all our different learning styles were catered for with different types of exercises through video, writing exercises and group calls.
Even so, I, like a few others, struggled to keep up with the weekly modules and felt a bit anxious about falling behind. Brook was very reassuring. She reminded us all that it wasn’t a race, that we could disregard lessons that weren’t relevant right now and take our time with things.
Her insights into the nature of the creative mind and the need to ship, even when we felt insecure about whether or not it was good enough, were invaluable.
I really love the fact that I have access to the program for as long as it’s running and can go through it with future groups of people, receiving the same email prompts at the same time and participating in future group calls, too.
New inquiries, clients, retreat and conference
Since the program, my attitude towards business has had a makeover! It’s influenced the way I think about money and given me a far more practical way of approaching things.
I’ve made some positive changes to my website since taking the program and had more inquiries, including more inquiries from new dads about my Active Birth workshops, which is fantastic.
I’ve just co-hosted my first pregnancy retreat and was recently asked to speak at the Yoga Australia Conference in Melbourne, in the mental health stream, which is really exciting.
I’m excited about the future. I want to further use my qualifications in counseling, psychology, Mindfulness and podcasting to help both women and men explore more deeply the way we birth, care for our children and each other and for our precious planet.

As mature adults, we don’t want to be told what to do in business, but shown how to do things for ourselves, without compromising our highest values or our deeper desires. It’s this respectful, progressive approach that makes Hustle & Heart unique.
The online community has been fabulous, with a few familiar faces, as well as new friends. I’m looking forward to meeting people face-to-face at our regular meet-ups and really enjoy having a community to like-minded souls to grow with.
Asking for the right help is not something a lot of independent women in business, like myself, are inclined to do, but it’s vital to taking the next step to grow your business in a sustainable, profitable and meaningful way.

Building your reputation, Client case studies
Sharyn Coughlan is an executive coach and workplace wellness consultant, specialising in the not-for-profit sector, who participated in the September 2017 intake of the Hustle & Heart program. This is her story.
I decided to do the Hustle & Heart program because I wanted to learn marketing for my new business. I’ve had thirty years experience in management and coached and managed people working as directors of marketing, as well as strategic planning, policy and operational functions. I had experience in marketing and understand the fundamentals.
But marketing as a sole operator is very different. I wanted to get the narrative right – the pieces you pull together to form a meaningful story. That’s powerful marketing.
[Tweet “”I wanted to get the narrative right – that’s powerful marketing.””]
I’ve been receiving Brook’s emails and reading her blogs for some time and knew she was good at this.
I’ve been a consultant for a number of years. I started my side hustle in 2012 when working full-time in executive management, which was hard. In June 2017, I became full-time self-employed, which was very different. Suddenly, you have no-one to delegate to and every decision rests on your shoulders alone.
I wanted to do a better job of branding and positioning myself and needed a sounding board and feedback from somebody objective.
Coaching + training
In executive coaching you empower people to solve their own problems; you don’t intervene. But the Hustle & Heart program is not just about coaching. It combines information and practical tutorials and training with coaching, which I love. It trained us in the fundamentals of financial management, marketing and branding, PR and publicity, while coaching us to optimise that learning.
I loved the process of learning in the Hustle & Heart program because it was self-directed, not imposed. I liked all the opportunities to implement as we went. The Facebook Lives in our community group were fantastic – I would never have tried that without being given this forum to do it, in a way which felt supported.
It was invaluable being able to test ideas in the group – to ask for feedback and to give feedback to others, which is also a learning process.
Since doing the program, I’ve started refining my personal brand. I’ve always been an action researcher – I like to experiment with what I learn and put things into practice. That’s what makes someone strategic – being able to draw on a wide range of information to come up with a solution.
Before the program, I was anxious about whether or not I was going to make it on my own. I feel far more confident now, not only to do a range of different things, but to be brave about bringing my unique background and perspective to what I’m doing.
My business is so new. It’s evolving in front of me. I’m excited about what I’ll do next.
Are you ready to step up and see what’s possible in your business? Hustle & Heart is open now.

Nicky Angelone is a counsellor and yoga and meditation teacher who participated in the September 2017 intake of the Hustle & Heart program. Here’s her story, in her words.
At the beginning of 2016, I started teaching yoga classes in my local bayside neighbourhood here in Melbourne while working as a business analyst four days a week, in a large organisation based in Melbourne’s CBD.
I was considering what I could do to take my business to the next level and started following Brook’s writing and videos through the Hustle & Heart website and joined her email list. I was really inspired by what Brook had to say. It all made real business sense and also aligned with my values.
I joined the Hustle & Heart program in September 2017 because I was ready to accelerate my business. I had a website already and had started social media channels but was really making it up, on my own, which I knew wasn’t going to cut it.
The next month, in the middle of the program, I lost my job and became full-time self-employed. The timing was quite serendipitous.
Sink of swim
While the loss of my job was a surprise, it was a good time for me to move out of employment and into my business full-time. I methodically completed all the Hustle & Heart lessons. I looked forward to receiving the email trigger every Monday morning, revealing a new module for me to devour.
I appreciated that Brook encouraged us to skip lessons that weren’t relevant, so although I read every lesson, I didn’t agonise over implementing every little thing. I loved the Facebook Live videos in our private community and the mix of audio, video, and written lessons.
Comparisons and doubt
Brook encouraged us to ask questions to the community group as a way to share our learning and knowledge. She also partnered us up with accountability buddies, which was great. I’ve met several of the Hustle & Heart alumni here in Melbourne since, and found a wonderful woman in Sydney who’s given me lots of support as I move into offering coaching.
It’s been invaluable having regular business planning sessions and meet-ups here in Melbourne. I’ve attended two, and met more like minded Hustle & Heart people at these sessions.
You can go your own way
What I found invaluable in doing the Hustle & Heart program is coming to the realisation that I don’t need to do what everybody else is doing. There’s a lot of hype about content marketing and obviously, Brook teaches content marketing in the program, including blogging, email marketing, social media marketing.
But I don’t want to follow a strict content marketing program as writing isn’t my strength and it doesn’t seem critical to my market at this point. That may change, but for now, I’ve explored different ways to advertise and market to my audience, as part of the program.
I was relieved to find my thoughts on this were respected by Brook and I didn’t feel any pressure to do what everyone else in the group may be doing. I actually connected with a couple of women in the program who were also not keen on content marketing and this has been really helpful for me, to know I’m not the only one and confirming that it’s quite okay.
When you’re on the outside, looking in at other people’s businesses, they look so much more confident and together than you feel. But now I’ve been on the flip-side, and seen how diverse we are, all with different personalities, businesses and goals. This is a great reminder that we’re all, to a degree, making it up as we go, as entrepreneurs.
We can all be doubtful about money, pricing, branding, marketing, from time-to-time. It’s been a relief to realise that doubt is normal and to feel supported by Brook to move through negative feelings and keep taking action.
New offering, new clients
During the program, we were given a challenge to launch a new offering. At the time, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Since finishing the program in November, several ideas have germinated and I’ve launched a couple of new offerings – corporate wellbeing programs and wellness coaching.
I have a few proposals in the pipeline and am really looking forward to see where these lead and how my business will evolve over the next twelve months.
As an accountant, I’m already confident writing financial projections for myself and keeping a close eye on my numbers. I’ve set ambitious goals and am on my way to achieving them, though I’m not buying into the ‘six figure business’ overnight palaver.
Since the program, I’ve revised my website and appreciated the feedback and support of the Hustle & Heart group in doing so. I’m feeling more comfortable writing about myself and my business. I believe my brand is far stronger as a result.
I love what the program stands for: to use your values to define your brand and guide your decisions. To create and refine your business to suit your uniqueness. And to take risks, experiment, back yourself, and keep stepping outside of your comfort zone. My confidence has grown as I’ve seen others in our community do just this, and it’s so good to have a supportive community to fall back on when you’re doing something brave.
Hustle & Heart is open for registration now.
Client case studies, Values-based business
Nikki Shilling is a yoga studio owner from the seaside town of One Mile Beach in Port Stephens, about two hours north of Sydney. Here’s her story:
I’ve been self-employed for 13 years teaching yoga up in Port Stephens, and had the idea of creating a year-long program to help people work towards positive change in their lives. Changing habits isn’t an easy thing to do. We need support over a much longer time than we tend to believe, to help those changes to stick.
I’ve managed to overcome an eating disorder and I smoked for 10 years but gave it up. I’ve also suffered from depression on and off and have been through some dramatic life experiences. I know that sometimes we just need to shift our perspective and let go of what we think it means to have a reasonable outcome. Our media sets high expectations of dramatic, fast change that’s just not realistic or helpful for people. We have to get to know ourselves – to create time for ‘self-study’ to discover what it is that “leads us into temptation” in the first place. Transformation happens when we change the way we think. It’s more powerful and longer lasting than simply changing what we do.
Stop dreaming and start launching
To stop dreaming about this program and actually launch it, I reached out to Brook and did her Hustle & Heart program in 2016. While I really don’t like hype, I do need inspiration and I really like Brook’s realness and her highly practical approach to being bigger and bolder in business. I needed Brook to push me and to help me realise that I do have something worthwhile and interesting to say, because without that, I tend to think that I have to go gently and not rock the boat or I’ll annoy people.
Through coaching with Brook, she focused me on compiling a list of ‘most likely’ candidates to do my first year-long program, which I named ‘Active Intentions’, and to focus the majority of my marketing efforts there. To be honest, I was skeptical that sending lots of emails would work. Inviting people to participate in my program really pushed me to be confident in how I expressed my hopes for the program. But I did it and got my target number of 10 people committed! It’s been so fantastic to see this long-held plan come to fruition.
The group connected really well and a couple of people really came out of themselves and made some pretty radical life changes. Now that I’ve run Active Intentions, I’m in the process of turning it into an online program, supported with live meet-ups and events. I’m also creating additional yoga materials to sell as part of a monthly membership at my studio.
Finding time amid a busy life
With two boys aged eight and thirteen and a business to run, I didn’t have a lot of time to complete Hustle & Heart. But it was important to me to complete it. I had planned to do it and I needed to be able to approach it differently as I didn’t have great chunks of time to devote. The way the program was packaged meant I could piecemeal it. I put the times I would do it into my diary and printed the lessons out to read with my coffee, scribbling notes all over them.
There was always something for me to use. One of the things that had a big result was the way I wrote to my email database – far differently than normal. Using enticing language, I had a lot of responses from people who liked that my language was far more personal and relatable.
Challenging our conditioning and perspective
There’s so much smugness online and it just makes you feel guilty, that you’re not doing enough or keeping up. So many women tend to feel guilty about this, that, or the other. Hustle & Heart really challenged me to think differently – to let go of the way we’ve been conditioned to see the world. I wanted to help others see that the way things can sometimes be depicted online has little basis in reality.
Your mind wants to believe stuff but that doesn’t necessarily make it true. The amount of things that fly through your social media feed that are aimed at people’s insecurities is unbelievable. Hustle & Heart helped me appreciate how I, and others, were buying into crap that wasn’t useful, wasn’t helpful and wasn’t true. It helps me examine the messages that are coming at us – and those that we’re putting out in our business – with fresh eyes.
Values-based business to define your difference
The concept of values-based business really resonates with me. Since doing the program, I’ve revised my website to use clearer language about what I offered, who I was, and expectations of clients. I’ve become far more confidence since reexamining my branding, positioning and reputation. I have far more experience than I tend to give myself credit for. I now notice and believe people when they pay me a compliment. It’s helped me understand trustworthiness and how it goes hand-in-hand with business.
I’ve reinforced my business boundaries, particularly as they relate to the concept of each and every business having a different ideal client. It’s easy to accept all clients and work, but that’s not smart, not always profitable! The Hustle & Heart program helped me understand that saying no isn’t selfish and see where in my life I was wasting time with things that didn’t align with my goals. I’ve turned down work and referred people on, and bought back my sanity, downtime and peace-of-mind.
I’ve got a lot of materials from Active Intentions now, and a structure that I can replicate online. I’ve bought a video camera and the next goal is bring this sense of community that I’ve created – and that I found through Hustle & Heart – into the online environment.
Everyone – in business and otherwise – needs more support. Everyone believes everyone else has it all together and knows what they’re doing. I want to support people to be more gentle on themselves as they make small positive changes that lead towards bigger, more fundamental change, just how Hustle & Heart supported me.
